Chinese Calligraphic Culture Research Center
The major of Calligraphy Education of CNU was established by
Ouyang Zhongshi, a renowned scholar and calligrapher. In 1985,
adult calligraphy college education started and 93 students
were taken in throughout the country, which attracted wide attention
and supports from academic and calligraphic circle. Those came
to give lectures or become teachers including: Zhu jia, Li Changlu,
Wang Xiaju, Ouyang Keliang, Liu Jiuan, Zhang Chonghe, Liu Qian,
Ye Xiushan. Yang Chenbin, Qiu Xigui, Gao Ming, Shen Peng, Li
Duo and Liu Binsen. The first batch of graduates acquired comprehensive
improvement in their knowledge and artistic accomplishment,
whose graduate exhibition was held in Beijing and Hong Kong,
obtaining high praise. Calligraphy education was offered after
the success of the former college education, which made the
high-level adult calligraphy education a complete system.
At the same time when adult calligraphy education was created,
Ouyang Zhongshi pushes it further to a higher level. In 1991,
the center was allowed to enroll master post-graduates while
in 1993, Ph. D degree authorization was approved by the Academic
Degree Commission of the State Council. Furthermore, post-Ph.D
in calligraphy was established with the approval from Ministry
of Personnel in 1998, when the first post-doctor entered the
university and began his research work. Aimed at widening channels
for high-level talents in calligraphy education and offering
more training opportunities for more people majoring in calligraphy
theory and education and calligraphers, the Center has set up
a class for major courses for post graduates and another class
for students who wanted obtain diploma with the same effectiveness
as that of post graduate. At the same time, the center accepts
visiting scholars, graduate students, and foreign doctors and
master post-graduates in a wide range. Doctor Examination Advisory
Committee is founded to ensure talent selection, education quality
and the principle of fair competition, and famous scholars of
Jing Kaicheng, Feng Qiyong, Shi Shuqing, Shen Peng, Wu Xiaoru,
Wang Xuezhong, Jiang Weisong, Cheng Dayu, Yao Dianzhong and
Wei Junxiu are invited to serve as the members. The center also
invited famous scholars as Yao Zongyi to work as the consultants
to give teaching and conduct scientific research and chair doctors
and post-graduates' graduation paper reply.
Thanks to a decade's hardworking and supports offered from all
circles, Capital Normal University has formed a perfect higher
calligraphy education system ranging from post Ph.D, P.h.D,
MA to college, and the calligraphy education is listed into
the key construction disciplines of State "211 Project",
which makes calligraphy education included in modern discipline
construction system of our country, a key category in cultural
and arts and position steadily in higher learning system and
academic field. Since its foundation, CNU has made outstanding
achievement in higher talent education. 800 adult education
graduates, 16 masters, six Ph.Ds, 80 plus from post graduate
class, eight foreign Ph.D and masters and 20 visiting scholars
and graduates students are cultivated in the center.
As leader of the center, Ouyang Zhongshi set up the direction
and fundamental concept for calligraphy education. First, proceeding
from the angle of the characteristics, overview should be much
wider to keep from the narrow artistry, and make a wider and
deeper study on calligraphy by regarding it as cultural phenomenon.
Calligraphy is an integral part of Chinese culture. As a major,
calligraphy would be restricted if it were deemed as an art
only. To make calligraphy a branch of learning, its cultural
intension shall be further explored, and a complete scientific
and theoretical system shall be set up to upgrade academic level
of calligraphy to a new height and find its correct position
in modern discipline construction. Secondly, study on calligraphy
shall not be conducted to explore its cultural and art value
and its inner development rule only, but also to establish connections
with other relative disciplines, to seek crossing of discipline
edges, to set up a two-way relationship, to draw nourishment
from others, to position calligraphy in Chinese culture in the
crossing of multi-discipline as a result of fixing coordinates
of calligraphy in modern discipline construction. Under the
fundamental concept, moves shall be taken to establish a complete
and scientific calligraphy education system step by step, making
clear study and field, fixing education objective, laying down
teaching planning and course layout, to form a distinct advantage
and feature during the process of improvement and deepening
of discipline construction, to push itself to be a base for
higher talent education and scientific research on calligraphy
of our country.
